I have been obsessed with Duolingo and spending on average 5 to 12 hours a days for the past 3 years but I think I need to stop. I realize how miserable I am.

Two days ago, I read an article by a famous actor who said he obsessively worked so hard doing things he thought was necessary during the success of his show but he was miserable for years. He sacrificed time that could have been spent on relationships and joy. He said he was miserable for years and he was the cause of it and he couldn't say whether his work ethic contributed the success of his show or not but he felt he wasted time and he doesn't know if he had to or not.

I have no benefits for learning French. I won't get paid more and there is no promotion waiting for me.

I obsessively learned French mostly through Duolingo but that has to stop. Every time I was depressed and sad about relationships, I would play Duolingo to cope with my emotions because its better than mindless scrolling social media. I thought I was being productive but doing Duolingo was just replacement.

And I feel frustrated with my relationship with a Christian who thinks just praying to the lord solves everything. He doesn't do anything towards his goal but just prays. I frustrated by this person. I don't know how to cope tell God how angry I am and what should I do about it? Anyways its just one of my frustrations.

I thought at least I felt i was being productive by studying French rather than spending time being angry at God.

It made sense for you to believe that playing Duolingo to learn French was better than mindless scrolling through social media. Now that you've learned so much, can you join a French speakers or French learners Meetup in your area to practice your skills in person? I wish I could revive my French (I was fluent in high school), but I do not have time to study. Still, I inquired about classes locally and many people recommended those Meetups instead of or in addition to classes. Such a Meetup can give you in-person social interactions, practice for the new skills, and a distraction from the relationship with the man who just prays and prays.

You are right, though, in noticing that Duolingo has become a replacement. Any activity, no matter how good, can become a replacement if used as a tool of suppressing rather than processing difficult emotions. But you have learned a lot, so do something with it, and you will feel better. Another idea is to start reading French novels or poetry in the original, if you have enough of the command of the language to do that. That will take you off Duolingo and will demonstrate to you that you have achieved something in those three years. Paper books are better than ebooks, if you have the choice.

My French still isn't that great at forming my own sentences. I might be able to recognize some phrases similar to Duolingo. I can understand some French basic videos more than I can speak it. I might take a long time to make up my question and then show it to chatgpt and it will tell me if it's not right.

Even though I did 3 years of Duolingo, I started from the beginning level and spent hours reciting each sentence at time and writing them down. If I was puzzled by a sentence, I might look online for clarity. It was a slow but long process.

And I didn't think of using chatgpt until a year ago. Using chatgpt has helped me more than searching online for why grammar structure or choice of word was used in a sentence. It gave me detailed explanations and quizzes. And it cleared up a lot confusing details i had which gave me more confidence in my learning.

Because I learned so much, I am starting to enjoy some weekly french animation series. But I still watch those in small doses because stories can depress me when it feels personal and reflective. I have gotten better at understanding these shows.

I mainly text my French coworker in French but I make too much mistakes when trying to make it up on my own that he reverts to writing in English to me when he really has a question and doesn't want to figure out my bad French.

The problem with Duolingo is most of the sentences are very simplistic every day sentences even though there are multiple sentences sometimes in a question.

Duolingo is not going to help me speak formally in a work setting. My goal is to learn Formal French but it's too difficult at the moment....

Today has been challenging. My online friend of 3 yrs said she didn't believe I am addicted to Duolingo. She thinks I can pass the course but won't do the French course i gave despite i told her it was too gaff. She thinks I am lying to people about doing French but I really am just playing Duolingo.

I feel really hurt but as it is I don't think I am allowed to have feelings.

I struggle every day mentally but I can't talk about those things without angering people...

I can't cope with people. I feel God wants me to accept being alone because people are too painful for me.

I can't talk about painful things because people are cruel.

I hate those who says Everything is going to be all right but makes zero effort. What they are really doing is quoting the Bible. They don't plan to do a single thing.

The Bible is a large collection of writings, and you can find quotes for many things there, suiting many tastes.

This online person doesn’t truly know you so their opinion on you learning French or using Duolingo is not valid. Ignore her. 12 hours or even 5 hours of Duolingo is excessive the same way any distraction could be. It’s easy to say stop it though. Not easy. Maybe use a timer and try to cut it to 2-3 hours?

I don’t know what’s up with these people and religion. I know great people from all major world religions and they never ever quote Bible/Torah/Quran to me etc (unless religion is the topic of discussion). Why are they quoting it to you? They must be on the extreme end of religious preoccupation? I’d try to stay away from them.

Thanks divine.

I came to the conclusion again yesterday to reduce Duolingo because I started studying the mock exam with formal french and its way harder than Duolingo with complex words and sentences ....
But who knows how long this realization will last. Eventually, I end up going back to Duolingo because its easier for me and it's still French.

Duolingo is great for every day speaking like if I want to make casual talk but not when I need to have formal conversations, reading or writing.

I haven't been able to reduce playing Duolingo. I keep changing my mind about it because I feel it provides safety from my emotions. I am a sensitive person and I am going to be depressed with my life/situation. At the same thing I feel like I am being productive. It feels so unsafe if I stop. Why give up something that keeps me out of trouble?
