My pcp prescribed methimazole. I’m curious to see the effect it has on my anxiety. If I feel markedly better it will be worth the inevitable weight gain.

I took my first of 90 doses of methimazole 10mg this morning. After 6 to 8 weeks, we’ll redo the labs to see if I am one of the lucky 20 to 30 percent who go into remission.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in the emergency room this morning. It was not an emergency situation, but when your complaints are intermittent shortness of breath with some physical activity and intermittent sensations of chest pressure randomly, that’s where they make you go because you need an ecg, chest X-ray, and iv. It’s good: my heart is perfectly fine.

I don’t even mind that I am now hypothyroid because I already knew being treated for hyperthyroidism with medication that that was a likely outcome. It’s much easier to control hypothyroidism than hyperthyroidism and I didn’t have to take radioactive iodine or have surgery. Just a 1.5 hour emergency room visit, most of which was waiting for results of ecg, chest X-ray, and blood draw. Follow up appointment with my pcp on Monday and a medication switch is all. I feel fine.

I had a follow up appointment with my pcp yesterday. They are referring me to an endocrinologist 75 miles away. The fear is I could flip flop between hyper and hypo and back again and still need surgery, which I knew from my own research could happen but chose to believe I’m just hypo now. Not looking forward to that but it’s better to start getting into the habit of going now while I’m feeling relatively well. Have to redo thyroid ultrasound and redo bloodwork in 6 weeks which is mid December. Still feeling my symptoms so it’s good I have the week off.
