Why do people want a label so badly? This one person I know keeps seeking an autism diagnosis because she has a quirky personality and has unusual hobbies and interests. Which doesn’t mean someone has autism.

But what would getting a diagnosis even do for her? I know people with autism are generally treated better by healthcare workers than other some other disorders and she has had a tough time with doctors and therapists. But I still don’t get it.

Some people want to understand why they do some things differently
Having a diagnosis explain why you have some difficulties
Sometimes having a diagnosis allows you to ask for disability financial aid too
I honestly would like to have a diagnosis soon about what mental illness I have so my family stops saying I don't have anything and that I take medication for nothing
Maybe they would stop dismiss my feelings
And I wonder if I have the right to a disability financial aid
Having this money could help me and I wouldn't have to work desesperately (I mean I wouldn't be desesperate to have a job and if I can work I would choose wisely and not have to suffer again because of a job)

I kinda want to keep my schizoaffective label vs a bipolar label because it might be more likely to keep the disability checks coming in. I wanted the ADHD dx so I could hopefully get ADHD treatment and not be looking for the same five things 10 hours a day 7 days a week (I got the ADHD-C dx and reassurance that I’m not schizophrenic just make connections faster than people can keep up with and then they claim « disorganized/psychotic thoughts » but no treatment other than « try to use your whiteboard more » but whatever). Same with BPD. that I actually got treatment for after the diagnosis so that was a win. People have been saying for years my ADHD and BPD were really obvious so it’s not like I was self diagnosing and trying to get a doc to put it on paper but I did want insurance to cover straterra and DBT therapy

Sometimes a label from an MD might be reassuring or feel like they have something to identify with (esp for someone with BPD traits) and it’s a lot easier to say « Iˆ’m struggling with my x symptoms » than spending three days explaining them

There are very many benefits in having proper diagnosis

Proper treatment, disability services, free or reduced cost training, assistance, transportation voucher opportunity, accommodations at school and at work if needed, resources, eligibility for assistance etc. if a person has no diagnosis, they don’t qualify for any of it.

It’s logical to have a formal diagnosis if you want any of the above

In the US, having a diagnosis is necessary but not sufficient to qualify for disability; you must also have a functional impairment. Many people have a diagnosis, but their disorder is well-managed and they can work full-time.

I've wanted to know what was wrong with me since 1977 and just recently gotten accurate diagnoses. Lots of professionals I've talked to told me diagnosis means nothing but I disagree.

I don’t think a diagnosis makes a huge difference if it’s between two things with similar enough treatment (a specific type of anxiety disorder over another), but if you’re treated for depression when you have bipolar, that’s not gonna go well. If you’re treated for bipolar when it’s BPD, that’s not gonna help. If your severe cPTSD is undiagnosed under a depression mask (which sure, may be there but it’s surface content vs core content), you will only get frustrated with treatment. But does it matter a whole lot if it’s bipolar 1 vs 2 or GAD vs OCD, I don’t think as much.

I would think for some it's simple validation. I know it was for me.
Many of us have a certain degree of negative self talk.
What's wrong with me?
Why don't I fit in?
Why do I want to isolate?
Why do some people not like me?
Why do I do "this"?
Why do others have life easier than me?
Why did God forsake me?
The list goes on and on...

A diagnosis can help us understand...it's not all our fault. I'm doing the best I can with my what I have to bear in this life. I'm OK considering.

And of course the financial help and other benefits you may be entitled to with your diagnosis. That alone can be the biggest single blessing in someone's life that needs that kind of help. It can be the difference between having a home or being homeless.
