I was watching Different Strokes and these kids are just running around Central Park and other parts of NYC. I read this in a book too 8 year olds could go out to the grocery store by themselves and actually buy stuff with out an issue.

Now parents will get arrested if their 11 year old goes to the park with friends and their 8 year olds walk home from school alone.

When I was 8 years old I walked a couple miles to the library and the convenience store. That was life in the fifties. The biggest threat was getting hit by a car when crossing the street.

Here there are elementary kids roaming around on their bikes parentless in the summer. As long as the sun is out and their not alone in sketchy places no one thinks twice. I used to walk to this pond with my friends and cousins unsupervised probably starting when I was like seven, it was only two miles away and we’d be picking leeches off for an hour then take the shortcut back and pick ticks off for another hour.

We have minimal violent crime except DV. A lot of drug use and homelessness but they’re usually on downers not whatever that guy that ate that person’s face in FL was on.

I remember walking to and from school in grade 1 with just a classmate. I also walked to the store by myself to buy myself a Popsicle in the summer. And when I was a bit older I'd be outside all day on my bike riding around with other kids. When I was 9-10, the other kids and I would spend Sat. morning riding around to all the places that the older kids drank and we'd collect the empty beer bottles and return them for money with which we bought candy. I had lots of independence as a kid.

Did they really let kids just roam around town on their own?

Walked to and from school in elementary and middle school. Went off "exploring" the neighborhood and surrounding area after school. Crossed six lane highways on my bike. Both my parents worked and my brother was 6 years older than me. I was a larch key kid before the term was invented. I loved the freedom of it. Having parents hovering over me would have driven me crazy.

The popular go home when the street lights come on was a thing! It wasn't carefree; you had to be careful and aware, but kids would generally go where the adults did not. I started roaming when I was 8, going to the store alone or with friend(s) was common - we weren't out of place at all.

A cool memory is of "convenience stores" that were in people's homes! What I mean is that a house was physically converted so that part of it was a small store, so customers didn't actually enter the homeowner's private space. But the 'store' was right in the neighborhood, not on a busy street. They often sold the basics, but I don't remember them selling perishables like milk or fresh vegetables, but candy and chips...and those big wax lips we all ran around with were easy to find, and 25 cents was like having a bar of gold.
