Country Joe, of Country Joe and the Fish, passed away at 84. Be honest, how many of you heard or started singing "the FISH song" as soon as you read that? Bought a CD with the song over the summer. This grey haired old lady got some odd looks blasting it out at a stop light.
For those of you who don't know Country Joe and/or the song, it was an anti-war song and the word spelled out was not "fish". 'Country' Joe McDonald, 60s Rocker Behind Antiwar Anthem, Dead At 84 | HuffPost Entertainment |

Never heard of him or that song. Heard plenty of other anti war songs but not that one. I listened to a Woodstock version. But not that memories of it.
Rip country joe.

I was 5 during Woodstock. Wish I'd seen Jimi Hendrix. I remember everyone flashing the peace sign and hitchhikers along the roads. And watching the war on the news every night.
I think my mother picked up a hitchhiker once and it was weird.

For those who don't know Country Joe or the song here is the Woodstock appearance. Please be forewarned if the f-word offends you, you probably don't want to listen. What's really sad is that the lyrics are as appropriate now as they were back then.

Don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam, and its 5, 6, 7 open up the pearly gates. I ain't got time to wonder why, whoopee, we're all going to die. Now come on all you big strong men, uncle sam need's a helping hand got himself in a little jam, way down yonder in Vietnam So put down your books and pick up a gun, we're going to have a whole lot of fun! chorus How is that from memory. I don't need to visit the link. |

Protest songs are dear to me. They touch on emotions, which all good songs do. If you know all the words, you couldn't sing them anyway without choking up.
"If I had a Rocket Launcher" Bruce Cockburn, ( "Let's Roll" Neil Young ( "Ballad of Ira Hayes", Johnny Cash ( "Hurricane" Bob Dylan ( and one of my St Patrick's day favorites "The Ballad of Kevin Barry" the Wolfe Tones. ( I recently learned that a good childhood friend proudly named his first son Kevin Barry Brosnan. |
