My wife needs dental work that was priced at more than $20000. Even when I was working, I couldn't imagine how to pay for it.

Now that I'm out-of-work and without unemployment benefits, I feel hopeless.

Has anyone been able to get help for dental care, perhaps through a philanthropic grant?

I do have dental insurance, but it maxes out at $2000.

I sympathize dentistry in America is a real rip off. They charge what they want and there’s no oversight. I was only able to pay mine becouse of my inheritance.

I went to As pen dental. Cost 500.00, then they told me 2000.00 more. I called my previous dentist, who said just a good cleaning, maybe two sessions. His total cost 150.00. Make sure you are dealing with honest people

You can marry the person that works in billing and get a family discount (at least at the oral surgeon’s)

What dental work does she need? I’d seek second opinion. I had lots of dental work done but it was spread out, not all at once.
Thanks for this!

I'd agree with that. My therapist had/has a patient that was in a similar situation and got a much cheaper solution.

My wife's front teeth are falling out, so the recommendation is to remove them and make partial dentures that would be held in with a total of five new implants, two on top and three on the bottom. She already has one on top that has a temporary "flipper."

My wife is very jittery and anxious and in chronic pain. And the pain treatment folks want to stop opioids. So any extra effort (like a second opinion) is too much.

I'm too overwhelmed to take over at this point.

I've heard of "Dental Tourism." I've heard that even when you include the airfare, getting work done out of USA is cheaper. In fact, I know a guy from Romania who went back there to have implants. On top of that, he was friends with the dentist.

Dentists piss me off. Mine has a picture of himself heli skiing in Alaska in his office. I can't afford a lift ticket to the mountain 10 miles from my mom's unless I get hired there or do this thing called trespassing

Yeah, I’ve heard of that too. I’ve read if you do your homework you can get great deals and valid doctors. Implants are so ridiculously expensive here. There’s a real divide between those who can afford it and those who can’t. Add into that anxiety and pain. Ooo I feel for her.

My daughter did dental work back home many times. But she was traveling there to see family anyways. Flying just to get teeth fixed is too much

True, my friend met with friends and family in his hometown, and he probably slept over someone's house.

There are crowdfunding websites for this sort of thing. It is used for all sorts of expenses such as funerals, medical expenses etc. They are basically fund raising sites for inidividuals facing burdensome expenses.

Probably the best known is Gofundme.com.

Thank you, @RockyRoad007. I think I'll pay the oral surgeon with the Care Credit card. At that point I'll know the full amount and provide a good proposal and accounting for it.

I didn't go that route several years ago when I needed one implant for this reason: my dentist said that, since there are several appointments involved, flying back and forth several times would erase the savings on the dental work itself. She added that she could have easily referred me to her former classmates from the dental school back home (she went to dental school in my hometown), but she dissuaded me and instead referred me to a local implant specialist. However, I needed one implant at the time (and later needed another). So for one implant, the economics of care and travel argued for doing the work locally. But if there are a bunch of implants, the reckoning would be different. I am very sorry to hear about this high-cost diagnosis. I know that some people get care from dental school-associated clinics at a deep discount. I have never done it, and I do not know whether you can trust these clinics.
