I see a lot of references between these two in this forum. Are there similarities?
And does schizophrenia always have a psychotic element?
I don't think I've ever been psychotic but I'm told I'm schizoaffective. I am severe bipolar (agitated depression) and was never delusional or heard voices.
I'm afraid to ask anyone what schizophrenia is because it's crippling. I lived in a halfway house and I know some of the people there were debilitated and probably schizophrenic.

I have seen a lot of overlap between Bipolar and schizophrenia in texts and in friends.

Some people with schizophrenia are professors or other jobs. It is all what you make of it. Your surroundings can have an influence on that.

My friend had psychotic breaks where they were delusional but they had many disorders.

Yes. Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health disorder that includes psychosis as a primary symptom.

It's all what you make of it? @CANDC. When you have a serious disorder it takes control of your life. (My functioning has been seriously impaired most of my life because I've had problems controlling the way I feel and relating to myself and others.)
Don't schizophrenics talk in word salads? So you have to be delusional to be schizophrenic?
I'm not sure why my NP said I have schizophrenia. She said I'm managing it (whatever that means).
Schizophrenia has nothing to do with problems identifying with yourself?

You have to have some psychotic symptoms for any schizo-diagnosis, but it's not always necessarily delusions. It can be hallucinations or disorganized speech/behavior too. A lot of the time in schizophrenia a person will have negative symptoms too (lack of ___ ) (fill in the blank with things like relationships, energy, motivation, speech, ability to feel pleasure, hygiene, interest in pleasurable activities, etc.)
