So I take the bus from one town to another to go to university. I went my first day on Tuesday and was unbearably anxious, on the way there and in class itself. I had sweaty palms, a smothering feeling, etc. Terrible feelings that I haven't felt in a long time.

I was lacking sleep that day, so that could have been part the reason. I haven't been feeling good lately, very unlike myself. I have an appointment on the 23rd of January with my NP.

The thought has kind of crept up in my mind that I lack control in this situation and therefore it is unsafe, being so far away from home. Even though I've tried a million times to convince myself that being at the university is actually safer than being at home, because there's more people around.

I couldn't sleep at all last night, so I didn't go today. Hoping to shift this by next week.

Sorry to hear you are so anxious. Many of the reasons you mention are possible.

something that happens to me is after a high carb meal or snack I can get sweats and anxiety. It can also happen after fasting by not eating. For me, having a protein meal whether vegetable or animal diminishes the symptoms. Not sure this applies to you but might be worth trying to have a protein meal and see if that helps.

Obviously, you need to be well-slept. Also, as I am sure you know, the gold standard therapy for social anxiety is exposure, so you need to keep going to class, provided you are well-slept. But if you couldn't sleep, it is wise not to go, just as you chose to do.
