Oh my goodness @Buffy01 That sounds terrifying! I don't know about you but my antidepressant gives me terrifying dreams like the one you had. Just to try and remind yourself that it's not real. You're safe.

Dreams can be disconcerting or disturbing but they are only dreams. They have no true meaning if by meaning you mean prescience or harbingers of the future.

Thank you. Melatonin starts giving me the terrible nightmares so I quit taking them. It could very well be my grief

Buffy, what dose of Melatonin were you on and when did you take that dose? I take 300 mcg, a microdose, at 5 pm. My CBT-I psychologist explained that it is in microdoses and taken about five hours before the intended bedtime. It doesn't give me nightmares and of course I have an occasional scary dream and recently was attacked by a hissing cobra in the dream, but it is not a rfurrent pattern. Taking mega doses of melatonin is not good for you and has not been proven effective for insomnia

It was over the counter melatonin. I don’t remember what dosage it was.

If from a drugstore, it was most likely between 3 and 10 mg, a dose that is an order of magnitude or more too high.

Has your feeling gotten better? Most of my dreams are enjoyable or entertaining. They're so much more interesting than my life has become

I reread my reply and though it was meant to be supportive it didn't sound very supportive.
I remember a dream from many many years ago that made me feel awful. It was just a dream but the emotion it caused was very real. The events in the dream never came to pass and the emotional turmoil passed quickly but I do still remember it.

Often death or serious illness in dreams simply means change. Something is changing in your life or you have come to a milestone. A big birthday, maybe.

When I was a sophomore in college I took a class in Jung psychology and we had to keep a dream diary. Dreams have no universal meaning. The meaning if there is one is personal and individual, when you have an ah ha! Moment, that’s the answer. But dreams are not obvious. It could be a simple thing like a confrontation you had with a sibling that distresses you. And your subconscious latched on to that distress and made it into your fears.

I like this idea. Back in the day, there were dream interpretation guides that assigned specific meanings to specific images or concepts in dreams, which is obviously bogus. But the individual, contextualized meaning of dreams for the person experiencing them is real.

I've had dreams that if remembered left me feeling like I had really been through something traumatic and that feeling could go on for days. Now when I have a bad dream I immediately count to at least 30 to try and quickly forget what is was about. I also added 1/2 an Ativan to my sleeping pill and it somehow keeps me from having bad dreams most of the time. Last night I was dreaming I was trying not to step in dog poo in our back yard. smh
