There is this conception of self-esteem by Nathaniel Branden, who is a psychotherapist, or I'm not sure if he's still alive or not but it doesn't matter. Anyway his conception of self-esteem is something like self-integrity maybe. I'm not sure if I believe that that is the true definition of self-esteem but I was wondering if anybody had any advice or input on this.

Branden, for example, postulates that if someone lies to themselves on some matter or that they think that no one will ever find out that they lie to themselves, that is not an action that is within the bounds of self-esteem.

I guess maybe personal integrity would be his philosophy but I'm not sure.

Does anybody think this is true or have any experience or knowledge about this?

Hi @WastingAsparagus - what is self esteem is a big question with many answers. I experience things I do wrong even if no one knows about it, my mind keeps reminding me of that until I start regretting that and commit to not do that kind of thing again. Then I feel better about myself.

It is onlybtangentially related, but Kristin Neff at UT Austin is against the concept of self esteem. Her thing is self compassion.
