My PCP keeps saying she believes this is why my periods are awful (if they come) and were never regular in my life. I found out my mom has it so maybe passed it on to me?

Looking to hear other experiences

Yes @MuddyBoots - it causes irregular periods, and hair growth in weird undesirable places. I have dealt with it most of my life. However now that I am older and in perimenopause,, the symptoms have lessened a lot. I don't think my mom had it, but maybe my grandma did. My sister has it too.

I do not have it, but I know that there is a body shape associated with PCOS, and you do not have that body shape. I do not know if everyone with PCOS has this body shape, though.

That’s actually one of the things my PCP picked up on because my arms still scream severely anorexic but my stomach is a whole nother ballpark (why I always wear baggy shirts/hoodies) and that can be a sign. It can also be a sign of being anorexic but restoring weight against your will as quick as you can to get out if a state hospital so idk. But my weight had always gone to stomach first. But I’ve never had weight outside of antipsychotics (or appeasing a psychiatrist to gtfo) and that’s a thing I’ve noticed (especially with certain men) is stomach blows up first.

Same for me with antipsychotic weight gain, but not outside the antipsychotic weight gain. I hear you. I think there is a morning cortisol test you can take to r/u Cushing's syndrome.

They suspected a potential brain tumor a ways back so tested my cortisol and it was fine as a wined up swine getting whipped with a vine.

Ooh now I wanna get wined and whipped

but yeah the never-been-regular periods that leave me incapacitated and anemic when they come, family history, and a few other little things have my PCP convinced it's PCOS and I should bring it to my obgyn

Do you at least take iron? With a little vitamin C, food or drink?

No, I haven't dropped down to anemic levels since last April/my last menstrual 'cycle' (I gotta laugh at calling it a "cycle"). Even when the eating disorder is bad I don't have an issue there outside of the 20 or so times I've menstruated in my life. Except that one time I blacked out for like 3 weeks and found myself in WV. That was weird.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16. Yeah, irregular periods that were really heavy when I did get them, too much facial hair, and lifelong struggles with weight. It was actually a relief for me to hit menopause.

I never heard of this and had to look it up lol. I did have trouble with excessive hair: Hairy arms, hairy legs, hair on my fingers above my knuckles, toes too, thick bushy eyebrows. I felt like an ape 🦍 woman and was reluctant to wear short sleeves. I know there’s a name for the hairy problem but I can’t remember it and don’t feel like looking it up. I still remember being 14 and a girl told me I should pluck my eyebrows.

Never thought about asking why I had the problem.

Periods are a pain, literally and figuratively. MEN don’t have to go through anything like that, once a month for at least 40 years! And those products are expensive.

Like Split I was relieved to hit menopause, even though it had its own symptoms, because no more periods!

But they came back briefly when I started HRT. I was going to start a thread on it but was discouraged as the site isn’t busy anymore. And I didn’t want to start a thread and get few or no replies. I get enough of that in real life.

Hirsutism. You had a mild case of hirsutism, no night owl.

I saw my gynecologist today and she is going to give me provera to shed the uterus lining that’s been there almost a year now and then do an ultrasound. If the ultrasound doesn’t show anything she can do blood work if I want to but I’m also getting back on birth control since I did feel better on it (safer and also just more regulated), and it can change the blood test results so it’s up to me if I want to wait a while.

Bad news, but at least you know what is going on. Not that you needed yet another dx, with your bouquet of dx's.

Hell, it kinda explains “half of half of” my other diagnoses. Who isn’t going to have emotional lability with high testosterone and unopposed estrogen?
