So I am 4 maybe 5 years away from retirement. I can first retire at 60 years old. I have the option of staying on for 18 more months to get more money but I think I won't do that. Life has been stolen from me enough.

But, you never quite know what your numbers are really going to be until you send it in for an estimate to HR. They won't do that before 5 years out.

I sent it in and was irritated to find my quote to be insanely low. When I questioned it... they came back and told me I hadn't sent some paperwork they needed. When I did that it came back enough to cover my expenses in retirement. Expenses plus extra. The quote is based on my rate of pay right now so it will likely go up by the time I retire. My expenses are based on my expenses right now in an expensive state so they will likely go down.

It just filled me with so much joy to have that option.

Though, every single day my workplace drives me mad.

Wow @NatalieJastrow that is great news. Looking forward to retiring is very hopeful.

There are different strategies like building an emergency fund of a couple years of expenses that made my transition into retirement a lot less worrisome. I had to figure what inflation might be and that made me save more and work longer because the last thing I wanted to do is have rent and food go up so much that I could not live on retirement funds.

A couple years before retiring I started a what to do in retirement journal and it gave me ideas that I did when retired.

Great idea @CANDC.

I do have savings that is 50% stocks. I expect this to offer additional funds in the form of dividends.

I also have a 401K that I am required to take funds from each month when I retire... but I will be taking the minimum as I want to use that fund in case I need assisted living. This offers additional funds.

I just wanted to be sure that the money coming in from an independent source would be enough to retire on.
Thanks for this!

.
Are they individual stocks or index funds? I have index funds. The one that has been doing best has lots of tech stocks like NVIDIA and Amazon in it. I get capital gains from it every year and I have been putting those in simple safe CDs with 3-4% interest. I still remember how stocks crashed in 2008 so I want more safe money now. Are you counting on social security? because I think it's going to only give us half of what it was supposed to. No one is doing anything to stop it from going broke.

Mix.

It isn't counting on social security but frankly I do believe social security will be just fine. There are millions that only survive on that and so if it was cut not only would there be humanitarian issues but the economy would crash. They will come up with the money when they need to.
