So when I started working at my place we had a punch clock. I thought it was insulting. I haven't had a punch clock since I worked retail and I am expected to be a professional. The clock jipped people out of time because people would forget to punch in and they set up a system whereby if you were 1 minute late... you had to put in leave in 15-minute intervals.

Since we all commute into a city and often we are at the mercy of public transport we were often 1 or 2 minutes late.

I probably lost a day of leave every year to this.

But in 2016 someone got "Me tooed" and we got workplace conduct coordinators to make sure our complaints didn't go out to the papers first. The biggest complaint was this system and frankly there was some concern it wasn't legal.

So in 2023 (yes it took that long) we got a new punch-in clock that didn't put the time. It just said if you were in or if you were teleworking. Of course I assumed they were tracking anyway but I no longer had to put in leave slips for 1 minute late.

Of course... that didn't last long. We got an email yesterday that the time is back. The claim is... no one is tracking it but people have asked for it.

BULL.

We are right back to where we started from. Instead of being treated like a professional I will have to make my number one concern making that work correctly. Currently I work telework during my commute and then punch in that I am in the office when I arrive. But due to this system I will need to give it 15 minutes so they don't question how I can telework and commute. When in reality I can because I have a phone that lights up at any email.

I often forget to punch in early on... but do it eventually (around 10) and now I will need to make sure I am punched so I don't get questioned.

And now the rub... I know who caused this to happen... my friend. Long story short... my work friend dislikes the person who replaced her. So she is always watching her with a fine tooth comb and complaining. IMHO... she is out of line. I have said a zillion times that the question should be... is your work done! And this girl's work is done. Everything my friend complains about falls back on my job and I am sick of it.

And the most annoying part... the scammers with nothing to do are the ones that it is no skin off their back. They will punch in at 6 AM as telework and when I email them about something I won't hear back for 4 hours. They will get away with it though. They will come into the office and take a 3 hour lunch. But it doesn't matter because she is punched into the office and no one is watching anything but the punch in clock.

I'm sorry. That sounds completely infuriating.

Last week, I showed the NCO in charge of the military facility I provide maintenance for a situation behind the building. There is a large concrete pad which used to have a hundred or more wooden pallets stored on it. I got rid of them, making room on the pad to store other things. I pointed out to the NCO, that someone backed up a truck, and off loaded it onto the grass, instead of the pad. I noted that grass has to be cut, whereas concrete does not. Does he think he could have his troops store items on the pad, rather than the grass. The following weekend was a drill weekend and he promised to have the troops move the stuff onto the pad so I could mow the lawn. The weekend came and went. The stuff didn't get moved. He has other important things on his mind. I didn't let it bother me. I moved the stuff myself in a leisurely hour, and charged them five for my effort. The money was budgeted last year. If I don't use it, someone else will. Tomorrow I will mow the lawn. This is my last month before permanent retirement.

And it begins again. Yesterday I was late because of my train and I was working on the train. I was punched in as Telework when I am supposed to be in the office. But it was like 9:20 so I wasn't that late. My boss emailed to ask if I was coming in and I said I was stuck on the train but I was teleworking.

She goes... as I said there is no teleworking while commuting.

Now she had said this before.. mind you... not in any announcement -- randomly at meeting in response to comment.

So I asked for clarification. I said surely that applies to people who drive in (because you can't legitimately work when you are driving) but since I am sitting on a train for 45 + minutes... why can't I work while I am on the train? I have a hot spot so I am using my cell's service.

The good news she said she would ask HR about it. The bad news.. I think they are going to come back to me and say I can't because of concern about confidential information being in public.

If they come back with that I am definitely no longer working for free and I will not be lugging my laptop home daily.

I am fairly sure someone snitched on me -- managers aren't that smart.

What is really aggravating to me now is reading about the Gen Zers who outright reject managers bizarre demands, the same ones that i myself complained about my whole working life, only THEY get away with it!! This will become an instance of that, mark my words.

Yes I have an employee who is GenZ. She is "in the club".

We tried to get her to cover for me but she came back and said "I don't want to do your job" so management found a plumb gig for her. She will be doing a job that she doesn't have to come in at all for. 100% telework.

She is the worst. When she first started I asked my boss to include her in our lunches and she came back and said she couldn't go because she was allergic to seafood. I was like... don't order seafood. She goes.. no I can't go because if there is any contamination I will have a problem. Ok fine. 2 months later.. she is going to lunch with us. I guess that excuse was only for the day.

Then one time I wanted her to cover... and she was still pretending she wanted to do that... she told me she couldn't because she wasn't feeling well. But get this... she is still going to stay at work. She wasn't sick enough to leave work but she was too sick to do my job for fear she would infect my boss.

But she gets what she wants.
